The Roundhouse Derby College

The Roundhouse Campus is a development of a historic industrial site, forming a new flagship vocational skills centre for Derby College. Built in 1839 as railway works, after 20 years of dereliction, the site was rescued by Derby College to become a vocational college campus.

The project involved the complete renovation / refurbishment of a number of historic existing buildings, together with the addition of two new buildings to the site, the free-standing Stephenson building and the Kirtley building which connects the two ranges of Listed structures. The scheme was carefully designed to optimise opportunities for passive design features to contribute to reducing energy consumption whilst working with the challenges imposed by the Grade II* Listed buildings and English Heritage involvement.

Low / renewable energy measures incorporated included:

• Rainwater harvested from roofs and reused flushing toilets and irrigating the landscape
• Automatic occupancy / daylight dimming lighting controls
• Engineered natural ventilation systems to new build areas
• Exposed thermal mass / night venting to provide passive cooling and reduce temperature peaks

Axis Consulting’s role on the project was full traditional detail design of all project M&E services from inception to completion, working for the project design and build mechanical and electrical services contractors – Hilton Building Services and Imtech G&H.

The successful project won a number of awards including Project of the Year , East Midlands Centre for Constructing the Built Environment, Heritage Award, East Midlands Centre for Constructing the Built Environment , East Midlands Property Awards 2009
